NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Martha Stewart resigned Wednesday as chairman and CEO of the company she founded, just hours after a federal indictment accused her and her former stockbroker of lying to investigators who were probing her profitable sale of ImClone Systems stock.
Stewart will no longer run the media and homemaking empire Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, according to a statement from the company that said the CEO and chairman jobs will be split between two individuals, effective immediately. But Stewart, 61, will remain on the board and continue to serve as what the company called its "chief creative officer."
Earlier, a nine-count, 41-page indictment of Stewart painted a picture of a coverup in which Stewart and her former broker at Merrill Lynch, Peter Bacanovic, obstructed justice and made false statements.
But the accusations sidestepped a question that has captivated the public for a year: Did insider information allow the former stockbroker and one-time New York Stock Exchange director to avoid losses in her ImClone Systems Inc. investment?
"This criminal case is about lying, lying to the FBI, lying to the SEC and lying to investors," James B. Comey, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, told a news conference. "This is conduct that will not be tolerated by anybody." Continued…

A call to action from AMY LEE
[ from My Inbox ]
I am very excited to say that my television show concept, "The APARTMENT", has qualified as a semi-finalist in the PILOT PROJECT! (PILOT PROJECT is a television show concept competition, where the project's creator, Effects Production Company, will ultimately make a pilot show for the winning concept.)
I had stumbled across PILOT PROJECT'S competition while reading news bits and submitted my idea. I met with the producers for their live pitch opportunity in New York City and was made one of the semifinalists a couple of days later. Ruben Navarrete, the show's creator, called to tell me that my idea had been their favorite of the NYC live pitches! Following is a copy of my written submission, which can also be read on Pilot Project's website:
"The APARTMENT is a lifestyle magazine show, in the same vein as Martha Stewart, promoting the same ideas of efficiency and practicality, with similar cooking and do-it-yourself segments. But as the name suggests, the show has a younger, more urban feel. More style, less craft. More contemporary art / culture, fewer antiques. Think Martha Stewart (or Interior Decoration / Food Network) meets Sex and the City.
The show's name, "The APARTMENT", is meant to evoke the show's mentality - that of a young, creative, and glamorous, but practical and intelligent woman, living on her own in the city. As opposed to the suburban house found in most decorating or cooking shows, the backdrop is that of our host's stylish apartment, segmented like a how-to booklet on well-rounded living and practicality, but fun and glamorous - the balanced lifestyle."
I am currently one of 150 semi-finalists, which were chosen by Pilot Project's panel of industry professionals. Now the finalists are determined by an internet poll, open to the public, that ends SEPTEMBER 20TH. Only the top 5 scoring shows will move on to the next stage. I need your votes!!!
It only takes a few seconds to log-in and vote. spread the word – please ask everyone and anyone to help and vote for my concept in the competition!!
A web page that will offer more detailed information regarding "The APARTMENT" – the television show, with live cooking clips, pictures, segment ideas, etc.
Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,

Some of you I know, some of you I don't know. But I'm now asking you, all of you, to please take aside some of your time today, register at Pilot Project and vote for "The APARTMENT". Because, let's face it. I want to be on television.
Fortunately, over the years, I've managed to retain enough dignity to restrain myself from lurking behind reporters (Ti-Hua Chang… anyone?) or faking proposals at Yankee Stadium. I once even appeared on a Montel Williams show, appropriately titled "PORN STARS WHO WANT TO GET LEGITIMATE JOBS". I'm not even kidding. Check it out.
And some of these other pilots that are being pitched? I present Exhbit A:
Synopsis: A Teenager has been born with super powers that resemble that of a Locust: Strength, Jumping ability, Agility, Bullet-proof skin, and the ability to hear the movement of objects (or enemies) in the wind. He uses his power for good by investigating simple cases and battling super powered criminals. His help consists of his two sisters and his best friend. He is very intelligent and caring yet can't get a date to save the world. His main antagonists are local criminals called Cricket and Python. Cricket is involved in many illegal activities and Python is his body guard that is almost as strong as the Locust.
I mean, really.
So in conclusion, vote for "The APARTMENT" and spare yourself the misery of having to see me on the jumbotron "proposing" or asking aging porn stars insipid questions on bad day–time television. I thank you.
Sincerely,
